GENESEE COUNTY, Mich. — Cooper Street Cookies, a Michigan-based bakery specializing in twice-baked, allergy-friendly treats, will host a Costco Roadshow during the grand opening of the new Costco warehouse on Hill Road in Genesee County. The event runs March 13-16, 2025, introducing the family-owned company’s wholesome snacks to shoppers in the Flint-area community at the recently constructed facility.
The roadshow will feature the company’s 22-ounce Cherry White Chip flavor, a product already available in select Costco stores, alongside a “Pick 4 Mix and Match” option. Customers can choose four 5-ounce bags from a selection including Blueberry Lemon, Orange Cranberry, Cinnamon Chocolate Chip, and Brownie Chocolate Crunch. The bundle is priced at $6.15 for the four 5-ounce bags, providing an economical way to sample the bakery’s range. Each cookie averages 25 calories and contains no peanuts, dairy, soy, trans fats, or artificial additives, aligning with the company’s health-focused ethos.
Cooper Street Cookies began in 2011, founded by Elaine Surnow and her sons, Max and Sam, inspired by the cookies they grew up baking together in their cabin on Cooper Street. The bakery adapted a century-old mandel bread recipe—originally from Surnow’s great-grandmother—reducing sugar, salt, and fat to create a lighter, modern snack. Sales started at Michigan farmers’ markets in 2012, and the business has since expanded to national retailers such as Kroger, Sam’s Club, Amazon, and Costco. The Genesee County roadshow reflects this growth, coinciding with Costco’s warehouse debut to reach new customers.
The Cherry White Chip flavor combines white chocolate chunks with Michigan cherries, sourced from local growers. Blueberry Lemon features Michigan blueberries and a citrus note, while Orange Cranberry mixes tart berries with orange zest. Cinnamon Chocolate Chip, the first flavor developed, remains a staple, and Brownie Chocolate Crunch delivers a denser, chocolate-heavy profile.
Production has evolved from a home kitchen to rented facilities, including an old bread factory in Pontiac and a dedicated bakery in Lathrup Village, before shifting to co-packers in Chicago and eventually purchasing a manufacturing facility to meet rising demand. Max Surnow, armed with a business plan from Michigan State University’s Product Center, helped drive this scalability. Kroger’s early partnership provided a critical boost, paving the way for broader distribution. The company also supports Michigan nonprofits, such as Make-A-Wish, through donations of funds and products.
The Costco warehouse on Hill Road, opening in mid-March, will host the roadshow from Thursday, March 13, through Sunday, March 16. Representatives from Cooper Street Cookies will be present, offering samples and information about the brand’s history and products. Online ordering is available at cooperstreetcookies.com.
