A culture shift in the auto industry is redefining what leadership looks like—and it’s making room for women to rise.
In a traditionally male-dominated space like automotive finance and insurance (F&I), real change requires more than numbers. It requires a heart-centered commitment to people, purpose, and progress. That’s exactly what Adam Marburger, President and CEO of Ascent Dealer Services, and newly appointed Vice President of Sales James Mercer are bringing to the national stage.
With a leadership philosophy grounded in empathy, service, and strategic mentorship, Ascent Dealer Services is not just expanding—it’s evolving. And that evolution is opening doors for a new generation of women and underrepresented leaders to step into spaces once closed off by outdated models of authority.
“When leadership centers around service, everyone wins. That’s how we build cultures where women can thrive,” says Adam Marburger.
People Over Pressure: A Different Way to Lead
The heart of Ascent’s philosophy is rooted in servant leadership, a concept Marburger explores deeply in his book, The Servant-Leading F&I Manager: Leadership Redefined. At its core, servant leadership flips the traditional power pyramid—leaders don’t sit at the top, they serve from the center.
“Real leadership isn’t loud. It listens. It builds people up. It makes room,” Marburger explains.
This approach is reshaping dealership culture, empowering team members to grow personally and professionally in environments where collaboration, not competition, drives success.
A Vision Grounded in Inclusion
Enter James Mercer, a respected executive with two decades of experience and a strong track record of mentoring diverse talent. From his new base in Burnsville, Minnesota, Mercer is leading Ascent’s expansion across the central U.S., championing inclusive practices every step of the way.
“We’re not just building a team. We’re building a future where emotional intelligence and cultural awareness are seen as leadership essentials,” says Mercer.
He’s currently working with four regional sales managers to implement Ascent’s values across new territories, ensuring that every dealership partner receives more than services—they receive support, strategy, and sustainable relationships.
From Showroom to Sisterhood: Changing the Culture
Marburger, an author, undefeated MMA fighter, and black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, isn’t just challenging old paradigms—he’s modeling a better one. He brings a rare mix of discipline and vulnerability to his leadership, openly sharing the challenges and lessons that shaped his approach.
“There’s no place for ego in servant leadership. If we want real change, we have to show up differently. We have to listen. We have to lead with love,” he says.
It’s a message that resonates far beyond auto dealerships. Women leaders, rising professionals, and anyone who’s ever felt unseen in a corporate structure are finding inspiration in Ascent’s model
Empowered Growth Through Education
Ascent’s training programs are intentionally designed to support diverse learners and leadership styles. They provide mentorship-driven development, hands-on training, and personal growth opportunities for individuals at every level.
“Dealerships aren’t just selling cars. They’re shaping communities. And that starts with the people inside,” says Mercer.
Whether it’s a woman returning to the workforce, a young professional stepping into their first leadership role, or a seasoned executive looking to lead with more heart, Ascent is creating space for all of it.
