I began traveling to Rwanda in 2005. It became so much more than a destination; it became a powerful and profound experience. I have been there 12 times and plan to take a group with me in October 2025.
Our work there was life-changing for donors and recipients, so I co-founded the Itafari Foundation. I believe we must not be spectacles but witnesses in other countries to receive the benefits of such a country.
One of the most moving moments I have experienced in Rwanda was meeting a woman named Aline, who had lost her entire family during the genocide. Despite her tragic past, she chose forgiveness and rebuilt her life, becoming a leader in her community. Her resilience was humbling and profoundly impacted how I see the world. These personal connections are what make Rwanda unforgettable.
One thing that never ceases to amaze me is the deep level of joy and laughter I have experienced on every one of my trips. I realized early on that the people of Rwanda do not want to be defined by genocide but by their strength and resilience. And so it is.
A Journey Through History and Resilience
What does it mean to visit a place with such a painful past yet such a hopeful future? What can we learn from a country that has turned tragedy into triumph?
One of the most profound aspects of traveling to Rwanda is engaging with its history and witnessing its people’s resilience. The country’s tragic past, marked by the 1994 Rwanda Genocide against Tutsi, is remembered through memorials and museums that offer powerful lessons on reconciliation and unity.
I recall standing at the Kigali Genocide Memorial, reading the names of children lost to the violence. It was an overwhelming moment, but what struck me even more was the presence of survivors who now work at the memorial, educating visitors with an almost unimaginable grace and strength.
Beyond its history, Rwanda’s people are at the heart of what makes it unique.
Have you ever shared a meal with someone whose story reshapes your perspective? Have you ever sat with a stranger and walked away feeling like family?
Travelers who take time to interact with local community members will discover a society built on values of community, hospitality, and hard work. Whether visiting a rural cooperative, dining in a local restaurant or participating in Umuganda (a nationwide community service day), visitors can experience firsthand the spirit of collaboration and resilience that defines Rwanda.
During one of my visits, I spent a day with a cooperative of women who weave beautiful baskets, each stitch telling a story of survival and perseverance. Sitting with them, listening to their laughter and stories, I realized that travel is not just about seeing new places but about forging connections that last long after you leave. Can you imagine walking away from a conversation forever changed?
Sustainable Travel and Conservation Efforts
Rwanda is a global leader in conservation and sustainability, making travel here an ethical choice for conscious travelers. What if your visit could directly contribute to preserving one of the world’s most endangered species?
From the world-renowned mountain gorilla conservation programs in Volcanoes National Park to the country’s reforestation and community empowerment projects, Rwanda exemplifies how tourism can positively impact people and nature.
On this trip, we will choose eco-friendly accommodations, support local businesses, and participate in responsible tourism activities.
Exploring Beyond the Tourist Hotspots
While many travelers focus on Rwanda’s wildlife, the country offers diverse experiences beyond the national parks. Have you ever wandered through a city that surprises you at every turn?
The bustling capital, Kigali, is a hub of creativity and innovation, home to art galleries, cultural centers, and a thriving café culture.
The shores of Lake Kivu provide opportunities for relaxation and adventure, from kayaking and boat trips to exploring nearby coffee plantations.
For those seeking an off-the-beaten-path experience, the lesser-visited Akagera National Park offers a classic safari experience in a uniquely Rwandan setting.
A Personal and Transformative Experience
Traveling to Rwanda is more than just sightseeing—an invitation to engage with a nation that has risen from adversity with dignity and strength.
The stories, landscapes, and people encountered along the way leave a lasting impression, offering a deeper understanding of Rwanda and a fresh perspective on resilience, hope, and the power of human connection.
So, are you ready to embark on a journey that will challenge, inspire, and transform you? Have you ever traveled somewhere that changed not just how you see the world but how you see yourself?
For those willing to go beyond the surface, Rwanda is not just a travel destination—it’s an experience that changes you.
