A woman’s handbag can hold far more than what is inside it.

It travels to work, dinners, celebrations, airports, meetings, vacations, school pickups, first dates, anniversaries, and ordinary afternoons that unexpectedly become memories.

For Uptown Common founders Grant and Jennifer Anderson, that relationship between a woman and the objects she carries is part of the thinking behind their leather goods brand.

Founded in 2019, Uptown Common has developed into an independent business focused on handcrafted leather pieces designed around function, durability, and understated design.

The company began with Jennifer Anderson teaching herself macrame and selling handmade work at artisan markets. Grant Anderson later added leather goods after developing an interest in traditional leatherworking.

In 2023, the couple discontinued macrame and shifted the business fully toward leather goods.

Today, Uptown Common’s assortment includes structured handbags, shoulder bags, clutches, briefcases, wallets, belts, and other accessories.

According to the company, its leather pieces are cut, sewn, and fitted with hardware by hand. Uptown Common primarily uses vegetable-tanned leather sourced from Italy and the United States, along with solid brass and stainless-steel hardware.

The designs draw from minimalist and vintage influences, with an emphasis on structured silhouettes rather than short-term fashion trends.

The company also embraces the way leather changes through regular use. Vegetable-tanned leather can soften, deepen in color, and develop a patina over time. For some owners, those changes become part of the object’s personal history.

That idea supports Uptown Common’s broader approach to making pieces intended to be used for years rather than treated as temporary accessories.

The company has also begun presenting its work to audiences beyond its Midwestern base.

In June 2026, Uptown Common made its Hamptons debut at MORPHEW World in Southampton during a two-day event that combined handbags, personalization and a charitable component benefiting Global Strays.

For Jennifer and Grant Anderson, expanding the brand has not changed the basic principle behind their work. Their stated goal remains making leather goods that customers can use, maintain and keep over time.

That approach places craftsmanship and material choice at the center of Uptown Common’s identity. Rather than relying on conspicuous branding, the company emphasizes construction, hand sewing and the natural characteristics of leather.

A handbag can serve a practical purpose while also becoming associated with places, routines and memories. Uptown Common’s work is built around that connection, pairing traditional leatherworking methods with pieces intended to change gradually alongside the people who carry them.
