What Inspired You to Share Your Life Story in ‘Journey to the West: The Biography of Kathy Phuong Luu’?

Growing up in Vietnam and living in the refugee camps for five years, I faced numerous challenges and hardships that shaped my outlook on life. ‘Journey to the West’ symbolizes not just a physical relocation, but also a journey of personal growth and transformation. It represents the courage to step out of my comfort zone, embrace new opportunities, and overcome obstacles along the way. I wanted to share my story because it might help others facing challenges in the world.

Could You Describe One of The Challenging Moments You Faced During Your Journey From Vietnam to the United States? And Conversely What Was One of Your Biggest Successes?

During the journey from Vietnam to China, it was an incredibly challenging time; I didn’t know what was going on, all I knew was that I was following my mom and other people in the group. I thought it was fun and saw it as a great adventure. I am an adventurous person. When I arrived in Washington DC in July, I felt very left out because I didn’t have any support having to rely on myself. I worked in a few different places before I went to nail school. I chose two role models whom I aspired to be like one day—they both opened beauty businesses, not just nail salons but full-service salons & spas. Now, my goal is to be different from any other nail salon business.

How did your experiences as a refugee shape your perspective on life and resilience?

I didn’t see the struggle; instead, I saw the opportunity. I took this opportunity to learn as much as I could. I always think about and look at the bigger picture. Resilience is in my blood, and it’s a blessing.

How do you define success?

For me, success is all about making progress. Facing those challenges throughout my life wasn’t easy, but attitude is everything.

‘Journey to the West: The Biography of Kathy Phuong Luu’ is an amazing book, is there any chance you will turn it into a movie?
