Ana L. Reyes, better known as Bionic Lady, is a force of resilience, faith, and inspiration. Her journey, marked by immense challenges and unwavering determination, is a testament to the boundless strength of the human spirit. Her book, Still Standing – An Amputee’s Story of Hope, tells the powerful story of her journey, capturing the resilience required to rebuild life after loss. Her story shows that life after amputation isn’t just about getting by—it’s about thriving, inspiring others, and redefining what’s possible.
Her battle began when she was diagnosed with cancer in her ankle, leading to six surgeries before doctors confirmed that amputation was the best course of action. It was a life-altering moment, yet Ana faced it with courage, leaning on her faith and the support of her beloved husband, Marc, and their children, Mark Jr. and Kristie. “The only limitations you put on yourself are all mental,” she reminds them, embodying this philosophy in every aspect of her life.
Now, as a dedicated advocate for the differently-abled community, Ana channels her experiences into empowering others. She operates in the realms of health, fitness, and sports for amputees, working closely with Gaylord Rehab in Wallingford, Connecticut, as well as veteran groups and individuals dealing with PTSD. She is an integral part of a support network where amputees find camaraderie, discuss mental health, and share insights about challenges like phantom pain. More than just a participant, she is a beacon of hope, demonstrating that embracing new challenges leads to a renewed sense of normalcy.
Ana’s impact extends beyond advocacy; she is an author. The title itself, Still Standing – An Amputee’s Story of Hope, reflects her reality: she had to learn to walk six times. Yet, standing tall, both literally and metaphorically, has defined her path. #StillStandingAmputee isn’t just a hashtag; it’s her life.
Her story is deeply intertwined with her faith. She recalls speaking nightly with a man from Brooklyn who had just undergone an amputation. Even while battling her recovery, she offered him guidance, encouragement, and hope. When he later lost his second leg, she continued to be a source of strength. Tragically, he passed away, but Ana remains grateful for answering that phone call, realizing the profound impact one person can have on another. It solidified her purpose to be there for others, listen, and share her faith as a foundation for overcoming adversity.
Her nickname, Bionic Lady, was lovingly given to her by a close friend, inspired by the movie Bionic Woman. With her prosthetic limb, she has become a real-life version of the film’s hero, educating others and breaking down misconceptions about amputees. Children at church and school often refer to her as a superhero, and she embraces the opportunity to turn curiosity into awareness.
She is also a proud member of the Amputee Coalition, where she participates in discussion groups and young adult support initiatives. This community helps her connect with individuals who have experienced amputations due to various circumstances, such as car accidents or illnesses, further reinforcing the universality of resilience and adaptation.
Ana passionately delivers messages of faith, hope, and acceptance after limb loss when allowed to speak. She believes God designed her story for a purpose and uses her platform to encourage her. “There’s life after losing a limb,” she emphasizes. “The difficulties you face in life can make you stronger. Hope is found in Jesus, our Maker because He has no limits.” Her motivational talks resonate deeply, reminding audiences that obstacles are merely stepping stones to something greater.
Ana’s call to action is simple yet profound: embrace life fully, regardless of limitations. She encourages people to find hope in their circumstances and connect with communities that uplift and inspire. She aims to increase her reach, grow her social media following, and eventually establish a dedicated website to expand her mission.
Reflecting on her journey, Ana acknowledges that she never envisioned herself writing a book. However, her story demanded to be told. She wants readers to connect with her experiences and understand that hope is always within reach. “Adversities in life are necessary for growth. We can’t control when trials happen, but we can choose how we respond.”
Looking ahead, she sees herself expanding her compassion ministry, continuing to generate hope for those who feel lost. She dreams of creating a formal amputee support group where emotional and physical healing goes hand in hand. She is committed to spreading the message that life is a gift, and despite hardships, it must be lived with purpose and gratitude.
Ana’s presence and mission are undeniable. She has spoken on various platforms, inspiring audiences through sports, mentorship, and personal testimony. Her resilience and courage have been widely recognized, though she humbly attributes it all to God’s grace. To her, the ultimate goal is not recognition but transformation, helping others shift their perspective from despair to hope.
Ana shares her story online for others to follow from @AnaReyes-Franco on Instagram. She invites people to connect, be inspired, and join her in a movement of strength, faith, and empowerment. “We can define ourselves by how we confront hurdles,” she says. “Life isn’t over just because we face difficulties. It’s only the beginning.”
Ana L. Reyes proves that even after a loss, one can stand tall. Not just surviving but thriving, still standing, inspiring, and breaking barriers.
