A gabion is a metal cage that can be filled with stones, rocks, concrete, or even soil. Once filled, it provides both aesthetic and functional benefits.

As a homeowner, you can make great use of gabions on your property. What you might be wondering, though, is why you should. Simply put: gabions can solve a number of yard problems.

Wondering how to use them for such? Then keep on reading. We’re going to cover the details below.

Use Gabions on the Edges of Gardens to Provide Them With Protection

One thing you can do with gabions on your property is put them on the edges of your garden beds. This not only provides the garden beds with a nice aesthetic touch but also protects them from external stimuli. For instance, a gabion might deter a passerby from stepping onto one of your plants. Or, it might prevent a wild animal from making its way into your garden area.

There are many stylistic options for gabions in a garden. You could fill them with rocks of any color. You could fill them with solid cement. Or, you could even fill them with gardening soil.

Use Gabions in Select Areas to Prevent Erosion

Erosion occurs when water impacts the soil at a high pressure. The pressure of the water carries topsoil with it, causing changes in soil slope and consistency. This is a problem best avoided, as it can negatively affect plant growth, not to mention the look of your property.

How do you stop erosion? One measure is to set up gabions. Gabions stop erosion by slowing the flow of rain. Instead of allowing rain to hit the ground at full impact, they force the rain to flow slowly down to the ground. By the time it hits the ground, it doesn’t possess enough pressure to cause substantial erosion.

This can be majorly beneficial in non-grass areas. That said, it can benefit grass areas as well. If your yard has any erosion problem spots, consider setting up some gabions in those spots.

Use Gabions as Nature-centric Benches

Another way you can use gabions on your property is as nature-centric benches. Again, you can fill gabions with everything from rocks to stones to soil and more. All of these entities exist in nature and thus offer a natural beauty that you can’t quite get with synthetic products.

Fill your gabions with one of these entities, and then place wood or stone boards over the tops of them. Secure those boards in place and — voila! — you’ve got new benches.

You can create loads of new seating with the help of gabions. You could even position them, for instance, around a fireplace or swimming pool.

Gabions Will Change Your Yard for the Better

When it comes down to it, it’s simple: gabions aim to change your yard for the better. They’ll make it healthier, more functional, and more aesthetically pleasing. So, if you’re trying to transform your yard, consider adding some gabions to the mix.
