We now live in a digital world, and that means protecting your personal data is now more important than it has ever been. With so much of our lives connected to technology, having cybersecurity for our personal data is more important now than ever before.

Every day thousands of innocent people fall victim to cyberattacks, and the sad part is the problem is only getting worse as the criminals get smarter and smarter. Not only are cyberattacks growing in frequency, but they are also growing in sophistication.

The consequences of your data being found in a data breach can be devastating. From financial loss to identity theft, your life can literally be turned upside down in a matter of seconds. The good news is that there are some simple things you can do to safeguard your personal data against cyberattacks.

Use a Strong Password

This is one of the simplest, yet effective ways you can protect your data. A strong password should be a minimum of 12 characters long. However, for premier results, opt for one that is between 16-20 characters.

Your password should include a mix of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Do not use any words or phrases that can easily be guessed. Consider using a password manager to generate and securely store all passwords.

Enable Two Factor Authentication

Two Factor Authentication, also referred to as 2FA, is a great way to add an extra layer of security to your accounts. When you enable Two Factor Authentication, you will need to verify a code before you can log into your accounts. This code is usually sent to a mobile device or to your email.

This makes it harder for hackers to access your accounts, even if they have managed to get your password. You should enable Two Factor Authentication on all accounts that offer this option. Generally speaking, all financial institutions, email providers, and social media companies offer this feature.

Keep Software and Systems Updated

One of the common ways cybercriminals get access to your devices and data is by exploiting vulnerabilities in outdated software. That’s why it is extremely important you update operating systems, applications, and antivirus software on a regular basis.

When possible, enable automatic updates. This way anytime there is a new update, it will automatically be installed on your device. If automatic updates aren’t available, make it a habit to check for updates every month. Please note this applies to any device that is internet-connected like your cell phone, laptop, and tablet.

Cybersecurity is not something you do just one time. It is an ongoing daily process. Make it your business to stay informed about the latest threats and security measures. You should also regularly review and update your security practices. Doing so could mean the difference between keeping your data safe, and having to spend thousands trying to recover your identity.

The three tips listed above are simple yet effective. Following them is one of the premier ways you can help keep your personal data safe and greatly reduce your chances of falling victim to a cyberattack.
