In the heart of Memphis, one woman has taken her early life lessons and transformed them into a mission of hope. Vanessa Caswell-Rodgers was raised in a humble home by her grandparents, alongside a twin sister and more than 17 siblings. Those formative years at Mt. Moriah East Baptist Church fostered in her a strong belief in God, family, and the beauty of community—a foundation she has carried into adulthood.
Vanessa Caswell-Rodgers, a graduate of Memphis Tech High School class of 85’, went on to pursue higher education at Shelby State and the University of Tennessee at Martin. The discipline and leadership skills she developed during her youth would later find purpose in public service, nonprofit work, and spiritual formation.
Living her faith as a dedicated member of Dominion Transformation Church under Apostle Kevin Davidson, Vanessa began to feel a calling that blended her deep-rooted Christian values with her passion for empowering youth. In 2018, that calling became more tangible with the establishment of I AM SHE Mentoring. As CEO and founder, Vanessa reached out to girls aged 8 to 20, especially those from underserved backgrounds, first-generation college hopefuls, foster youth, and girls of all races.
Operated with intention and love, I AM SHE focuses on the transitional period of adolescence, the point when confidence may falter, pressures rise, and direction feels unclear. With the slogan “We Are a Mirror of Possibilities,” the organization aims to provide girls with the space to reflect on their identity, dreams, and capabilities. Through workshops, mentoring, and emotional support, participants learn important life skills—self-awareness, decision-making, integrity, and leadership.

Vanessa’s passion extends far out into the community. As a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., she upholds traditions of service, scholarship, and sisterhood. She advocates youth development as a mentor with the Boys & Girls Club, participates on the Legacy of Legends Board under Commissioner Charlie Caswell, and brings her educational insight to the Frayser Community School System Board.
Beyond nonprofits, Vanessa is a compelling speaker. Whether advising in church, school halls, or civic forums, she shares a message of hope grounded in conviction. “Many girls face challenges such as limited access to mentors, exposure to trauma, or social pressure,” she recognizes—and this understanding shapes her speeches into calls for action.
As the wife of retired MPD Officer and minister Eric Rodgers, Vanessa’s home life reflects her public mission. The couple shares roles of spiritual leadership, community watchdogs, and advocates for young people. Yet Vanessa strides forward with her own brand of leadership coaching, not just through spirituality but through tangible programs and lived experiences.
At the heart of I AM SHE is the aim to equip girls with the tools needed to step into their future with confidence. Vanessa teaches that faith isn’t just a personal anchor—it’s a compass for direction. Her program’s success is evident not only in numbers but in transformation: girls moving from self-doubt to courage, from isolation to leadership, from silence to purpose.
Vanessa also collaborates with local schools like Westside Middle School and other Frayser institutions, bringing supplemental programming that supports teachers and students alike. She ensures that both the spiritual and developmental needs of youth are met with dignity and depth.
Her philosophy is heartfelt yet clear: “I want to be a consistent, empowering presence to help them realize their value and pursue their goals confidently.” The youngest participants at age 8 start with self-esteem building; the oldest, nearing adulthood at age 20, receive support with college prep, community service, and leadership development.
Looking ahead, Vanessa plans to broaden I AM SHE’s reach, pursue grant opportunities, build donor partnerships, and refine programming. Through each workshop or large event, her presence stands as a reflection of servant leadership.
In a city that has faced adversity and division, Vanessa brings unity through faith, mentoring, community boards, and family. With her story and status, she reminds each young participant that they are alive for a reason, that they can aim high, and that their dreams deserve placards in their heart.
Vanessa Caswell-Rodgers demonstrates daily that effective leadership starts with humble roots and a heart for people. For girls across Memphis and beyond, she isn’t just a mentor, she’s a mirror in which they can glimpse their own greatness.
