Did you know that September was National Sewing Month? If you missed it, you can still join and become a part of the various crafting communities across the country that are embracing the opportunity to kick back and relax with a skill that’s been honed for generations. From novice stitchers to seasoned artisans, sewing enthusiasts are gearing up to make the most of this dedicated month of innovation and skill-building.

For those looking to dive deeper into the world of sewing or simply refine their techniques, Corey Pearson, Chief Quilter at Linda’s, is sharing some expert advice. Pearson, a master quilter known for her exquisite designs and commitment to the craft, offers three essential tips to help sewers of all levels elevate their projects and enjoy the process.

The Stronger Your Foundation, the Better Your Work

Pearson emphasizes the importance of mastering the basics, regardless of one’s experience level. “Whether you’re just dipping your toes into the arts and crafts world or you’re a master quilter like me, you always find yourself needing to brush up on the basics,” she says.

The foundation of any sewing project is crucial, impacting the quality and precision of the finished piece. This means investing time and effort into learning and perfecting fundamental skills, such as straight stitching, cutting fabric accurately, and properly threading a needle. Pearson believes that with a solid foundation, sewers are better equipped to tackle more complex projects and achieve professional results.

“Think of it like building a house,” shares Corey Pearson. “Without a strong foundation, even the beautifully designed structure won’t stand. In sewing, quality tools and techniques are that foundation. Don’t be afraid to invest in good materials and spend time practicing those basic skills.”

Practice Makes Perfect

Sewing is an art form that requires patience and perseverance. For beginners, it’s easy to become discouraged when projects don’t turn out as expected, but Pearson reassures that mastery comes with time and repetition. “As much as I wish I could promise you you’ll be sewing outfits ready for the runway soon, sewing is a skill that takes time to develop,” she says.

Each project, whether a simple tote bag or a detailed quilt, offers an opportunity to hone one’s skills and learn something new. Repetition is key to developing muscle memory and gaining confidence with different techniques. “Take each project as an opportunity to practice what you learned previously,”states Pearson. “Even if it doesn’t turn out perfect, you’ve still gained experience.”

Pearson also encourages sewers to embrace mistakes as part of the learning process. “Don’t be afraid to make mistakes; they’re a natural part of learning. Some of my premier work came from projects that didn’t go as planned. You just have to keep practicing and pushing yourself.”

Inspiration is All Around You

For many crafters, finding inspiration can be a significant challenge. Creativity isn’t always a steady stream, and there are times when even seasoned quilters like Pearson struggle to find their next great idea. However, Pearson believes that inspiration can be found in the unexpected places if one remains open to it.

“Creativity is ever flowing,” Pearson says. “Some days, you may find yourself inspired by the menial of things, while other days even Picasso couldn’t inspire your next project.” He encourages sewers to stay curious and explore new sources of inspiration, whether it’s the colors in a sunset, the patterns of a cityscape, or the work of fellow crafters in the thriving sewing community.

Social media platforms like Instagram and Pinterest are treasure troves for sewing inspiration, offering countless photos and tutorials that can spark new ideas. Pearson also suggests joining local or online sewing groups where members share their projects, offer advice, and support each other. “The sewing community is so welcoming and full of creative energy. Don’t be afraid to connect with others and see what they’re working on—you might just find your next project idea.”

Embrace the Art of Sewing

Whether you’re starting your first project or expanding your repertoire, sewing is a hobby for anyone. Pearson’s tips highlight the importance of building a strong foundation, practicing consistently, and keeping an open mind to new ideas and inspirations.

“As long as you’re passionate about what you’re creating, you’re already on the right path,” Pearson says. “This month is about celebrating the joy and creativity that sewing brings into our lives. So, grab your fabric, fire up your sewing machine, and let your creativity shine!”

With expert advice and a community ready to support and inspire, there’s no better time to dive into the world of sewing and start crafting beautiful creations.
