The American flag is more than just a piece of cloth; it symbolizes the unity of a great country. Because of the United States’ ideals of freedom, justice, and equality for all, the flag has come to symbolize those concepts worldwide. American democracy is still a very young concept compared to the historical forms of government worldwide, such as monarchies and theocracies. Still, where the American flag flies, the hopes of democracy fly with it. Due to its importance as a symbol of these ideals, the 105th Congress of the United States enacted the US Flag Code, a set of instructions and rules for the proper display and use of the flag in various settings. In addition to the code, put your flag in a sheltered spot on a fixture that will not damage it. If you wish to fly the American flag properly in your yard, the US Flag Code gives several valuable instructions.

Hang the Flag Downward, With the Star Field on Top and to the Left

When flying the flag, the star field, which symbolizes the fifty states of the Union, should be at the top. Contrary to popular belief, you should never fly the flag upside down, even in times of distress. It should never be carried horizontally.

Don’t Fly It at Night Unless a Light Shines on It Constantly

As the saying goes, darkness should never fall on “Old Glory,” the nickname of the American flag. Take it down at sunset every day, unless a dedicated spotlight shines on it such that the flag always has a light on it.

Do Not Fly in the Rain

According to the Flag Code, the American flag must not be flown in the rain or any other descending darkness. Aside from its symbolic nature, rain damages the flag and causes the colors to fade.

Do Not Fly a Dirty, Worn, or Torn Flag

It is disrespectful of the components of what the flag symbolizes to continue to fly a dirty or damaged American flag. Replace the worn or torn flag in your yard with a brighter, newer one. You must properly “retire” the old flag when it can no longer fulfill its duties. A specific ceremony often accomplishes this, involving the careful tri-folding of the flag, the lighting of a ceremonial fire, and the flag’s immersion in the flames until its complete destruction. You must refrain from using the fire for any other purpose, like cooking, and let it burn out naturally. Often, the American National Anthem is played. Check with your local Scouting council, as Scout troops frequently hold flag retirements.

Do Not Fly Another Flag of Any Kind Above the American Flag

No other symbol or flag should fly over the American flag for any reason, including state flags. When hanging straight down, the American flag should be on the right.

By following these above tips, you will be able to properly care for your American flag the right way.
