A wellness startup founded by Michigan State University alum Allison Zaluski is turning to Kickstarter to launch a sour hard candy formulated with adaptogens and vitamin D, designed to help the brain shift out of overwhelm and support mood ease.

The product, created while Zaluski was participating in Michigan State’s Burgess Institute Launch Program and now being developed in St. Petersburg, aims to turn a familiar candy format into a portable wellness tool.

Re-Route Wellness enters a rapidly growing category of functional food and wellness products aimed at making everyday stress-management tools more accessible. Rather than pills or supplements, the company is focusing on a simple sensory approach—using sour flavor and a long-lasting candy format designed for on-the-go use.

Zaluski says the goal is to make mental wellness feel less intimidating while offering something small and practical people can carry with them when they need a moment to reset.

The idea for Re-Route Wellness began during Zaluski’s senior year at Michigan State University while participating in the Burgess Institute Launch Program, which helps students develop early-stage startups.

Zaluski says the concept emerged from her own experience trying to manage intense moments of overwhelm. During one such moment while driving, she pulled over and grabbed a bag of sour candy.

“I remember thinking that I was eating sour candy every day, but it was filled with ingredients that weren’t great for me,” Zaluski said. “I wanted something that felt more natural and had an added boost.”

That moment sparked the idea for a sour candy designed not just for flavor but as a sensory experience.

Zaluski had previously been introduced to ingredients such as holy basil and L-theanine during her sophomore year in college by a friend who used them as part of a wellness routine. Those ingredients later influenced the formulation direction for Re-Route’s product.

The candy’s hard format was intentional. Unlike chewy candy, a hard candy dissolves slowly, creating a longer-lasting sensory experience. Zaluski says that format was chosen so the product could be used on the go and as needed.

Early development began in a small, home-based setup where Zaluski produced initial test batches herself. As interest grew, she began working with food scientists to refine the recipe and ensure the formulation could be manufactured at scale.

The first limited batch sold out quickly, providing early validation for the concept and prompting the next phase: preparing for larger production runs.

To fund that scale-up, Re-Route Wellness is launching a Kickstarter campaign that will support manufacturing, packaging, and expanded distribution.

The company plans to sell the product both direct-to-consumer online and through retail partners once production ramps up.

Re-Route’s brand identity centers around making mental wellness feel approachable rather than clinical. The company’s tagline—“Fuel your peace, not your fears.”—reflects that focus.

Zaluski says part of the motivation behind the brand comes from her own journey navigating panic disorder after the loss of her father early in college. She says it took several years of exposure therapy and coping strategies before she felt she had regained stability.

That experience shaped Re-Route’s mission of helping people feel less isolated during moments of overwhelm.

“Re-Route was created to empower people who deal with these experiences so they don’t have to feel embarrassment or shame,” she said.

The Kickstarter campaign will serve as the company’s first major step toward broader manufacturing and national distribution.

Re-Route Wellness is also building an online audience through its social media channels as it prepares for the product launch.
