Michele Clark Jenkins and Stephanie Perry Moore edited the Bible. It is their second bible project, as they previously edited the Sisters in Faith devotional Bible.
Michele and Stephanie, longtime friends, came together to found the Sisters in Faith ministry, dedicated to uplifting and empowering African American women through the teaching of God’s Word. A testament to their commitment to providing spiritual guidance and support to their community, their collaborations have resulted in the Real BibleZine, the Sisters in Faith devotional Bible, and – now – the Breathe Life Bible.
Michele Clark Jenkins, also the author of She Speaks, previously held executive positions at HBO and the Black Family Channel, as well as serving as the former general manager of the Estate of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Currently, she works as the Senior Director of the Consulting Group at Griffin & Strong, P.C., specializing in disparity research. Stephanie Perry Moore, a bestselling author with 80 novels to her credit, serves as the showrunner for The Cool and the Strong, a scripted SCETV/PBS show based on her latest book series, Magic Strong.
The Breathe Life Bible includes an array of contributors, including Ambassador Andrew Young, Reverend Matthew Wesley Williams, President of the Interdenominational Theological Center, Derrick Johnson, President of the NAACP, and Gospel recording artists and pastors Marvin Sapp and Hezekiah Walker.
However, since this is Women’s History Month, we are highlighting women’s contributors to the Breathe Life Bible!
Women’s Songwriters Hall of Fame Inductee, award-winning Gospel artist and preacher Jekalyn Carr contributed a section called “Life Support” that talks about what it means to Be a Giver, Be Righteous, Be Persistent, Be Caring, Be Patient, Be Devoted, Be Holy, Be a Leader, Be Unmovable and Be Open.
Reverend Bernice King, daughter of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott King, contributed an essay called “The Insight.”
Other Breathe Life contributors include:
- Vashti McKenzie Murphy, general secretary of the National Council of the Church of Christ
- Dr. Thelma Thomas Daley, president of the National Council of Negro Women
- Pastor Debra B. Morton, co-pastor of Changing A Generation Full Gospel Baptist Church, Atlanta Georgi and Senior Pastor of Greater St. Stephen Full Gospel Baptist Church in New Orleans
- Dr. Charrita Danley Quimby, best-selling author and speaker
- Dr. Helen Delaney, retired nuclear engineer
- LaKeesha Walrond, president of New York Theological Seminary
- De’Leice Drane, senior executive of King Center for Nonviolent Social Change
- First Lady Jamell Meeks, who served 40 years as first lady and ministry leader of Salem Baptist Church of Chicago
- Dr. Lakeba Williams, founder of Fresh Hope Counseling Center in Decatur, Georgia
Each Bible book begins with a unique “Breathe It In” section and features a highlighted “#Oxygen” nugget that serves as a reminder of scriptural promises.
Michele and Stepanie came up with the idea to create the Breathe Life Bible to inspire fresh hope after George Floyd’s death in 2020.
They partnered with Thomas Nelson, who also published the Sisters In Faith Devotional Bible, to release the Breathe Life Bible, which is available now.
Even though the Bible is written from an African American perspective, it is for anyone who wants to put their faith into action, figure out how to live a life of faith, and fight against societal injustices.
Women have always been at the forefront of societal change, so it is fitting that women’s voices are prominently featured in the Breathe Life Bible.
