Rain gutters provide several functions that will help to protect your home and property for many years. From preventing damaging leaks to pest control, installing gutters will save you time and money. Here are six important reasons to install gutters on your home.

Roof and Siding Protection

Many people are under the impression that the roof does all of the work. While the roof is a necessary aspect of one’s home, the gutters protect the roof. Without gutters, there is nowhere for water to go. The rain will collect on the roof and cause the shingles to mold or even fall off. Also, there is a higher risk of leaks inside the home.

The roof is not the only thing affected when there are no gutters. The siding could become damaged. Rainwater can get behind the siding and cause damage and leaks.

Erosion Control

When water is pouring off the roof, where does it go? It hits the ground. Too much water will wash away the soil surrounding the home. It will also damage any shrubs and vegetation planted around the property. Soil does more than help to grow grass and plants. It also protects the home’s foundation. Without the soil, the home’s foundation will become damaged.

Pest Control

Mosquitoes and other pests love to live in puddles and other areas of standing water around the home. Without gutters to direct water away from the house, it will become a breeding ground for pests and insects. They can cause damage to your garden and landscape. Pests can get into your home and cause property damage. It is also a health hazard. Insects and pests carry diseases that are harmful to both humans and pets.

Curb Appeal

Gutters are a part of a home’s curb appeal. First, they help to keep the roof looking good. They prevent mold and mildew from forming on shingles and help to keep them in place. Next, when a house does not have gutters, it often has mud splattered all over the siding. Wet siding is also susceptible to mold and mildew. Water can also cause house paint to chip and peel. Lastly, gutters come in different colors, shapes, and styles, which add to the overall appearance of your house. It will be necessary to keep the gutters clean to keep the outside of your home looking its premier.

Prevent Wood Damage

The basic foundation of your home is plywood and tar paper. They are not waterproof. Water will begin to leak from the roof and get behind the siding, causing the plywood to deteriorate. If the water continues, it could cause costly damage to the home.

Avoid Excessive Mold Growth

Water that gets into the home is a breeding ground for mold. It will not take time for mold to grow inside the walls and other places. Mold is hard to remove and will become a health hazard for everyone inside.

Rain gutters are for more than catching leaves. They play a necessary role in protecting your home and property. They prevent unnecessary problems and will save money in the long term.
