Summer is the time of long days and warm, endless nights. It is a time of family barbeques and sleeping under the starry skies. It is also an active time for pests. Many pests are mere nuisances, while others could cause sickness and damage to a home. Below are six reasons to prioritize pest control in the summer.

1. Property Damage

Regardless of their size, pests can create a lot of property damage. Termites and carpenter ants will chew on wood. The ants are looking for a place to nest, while termites are looking for food. The damage can weaken your home’s structure.

It is not only your home that is at risk of damage. Bees can make their nests in trees and cause damage or kill trees. Different pests can destroy your vegetable garden and flowers.

2. Infestations

Pests such as fleas, ants, roaches, and more can quickly move from being a nuisance to becoming an infestation. Fleas and ticks are the most active in the warmer weather. You do not need a pet to have fleas and ticks brought into your home. Animals such as squirrels are carriers of fleas. Fleas and ticks can jump on anyone walking in your yard. Once they make their home in carpets and furniture, it is hard to remove them.

Roaches are more active in the summer. They enter the home for food, water, and a place to nest. They can fit through tiny places to get in and hide. Ants, too, like the warm weather and want a place to breed. Often, ant nests become overpopulated, and they move in with you. They also like an endless supply of food and snacks.

3. Health Problems

Pests can cause serious health problems. Many people are allergic to bee strings. Mosquito bites are irritating, but they can carry several diseases, including West Nile virus, malaria, and the Zika virus. Ticks can transmit Lyme disease. Flea bites leave red, itchy marks. Cockroaches and flies do not transmit diseases. They can; however, contaminate food with bacteria by touching it.

4. Stress

Pests can cause stress. The idea of spending the summer itching from bug bites is not appealing. No one wants to get up in the middle of the night to get a drink from the refrigerator, turn on the light, and see cockroaches running through the cupboards. Also, you will not want to host any summer parties and have guests notice you have a pest problem.

5. Cost

Having a pest problem can be expensive. First, all contaminated food needs to be thrown away and replaced. You will likely need containers to keep pests from continuing to get into your food. Any health problems from the pests will need to be taken care of. Also, any structural damage to the home will need to be corrected.

6. Lost Memories

Pests will cancel family parties, time in the pool, and evenings around the fire pit. Uninvited pests will cause the cancellation of family parties, time in the pool, and evenings around the firepit, resulting in lost memories. Pest control is necessary all year. However, it is crucial during the summer.
