Nutritional status may also warrant consideration in some patients, including potential issues involving iron, vitamin B12, folate or vitamin D.

Testing, however, should not simply become a race to order the largest possible laboratory panel.

Dr. Ericsson believes testing should answer specific clinical questions based on a woman’s symptoms, medical history, medications and risk factors.

Hormonal information may be useful in the appropriate clinical context, but hormone levels can fluctuate considerably during perimenopause. A single laboratory result should therefore not be interpreted in isolation.

Where Does HRT Fit Into Perimenopause Weight Management?

As conversations about menopause have become more mainstream, hormone replacement therapy, or HRT, has increasingly entered discussions about weight.

Hormone therapy should be prescribed when there is an appropriate clinical indication, not simply because someone wants to lose weight.

For an appropriate patient, hormone therapy can help manage menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats. If those symptoms improve, better sleep and overall well-being may make exercising, recovering, and maintaining healthy habits easier, but HRT should not be marketed as a weight-loss medication.

A woman experiencing both menopausal symptoms and weight gain may need both concerns evaluated. Hormone therapy can potentially become one part of that plan, but it does not replace a comprehensive metabolic strategy.
